Meh, I think “Yes We Can” is a do-nothing anthem

3 min read

“We know, the battle ahead will be long
But always remember that, no matter what obstacles stand in our way
Nothing can stand
In the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change
(We want change! We want change! We want change! We want change!)

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant.
We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check.
We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.
But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. We want change!”
– Will.i.am

Hope, you know, but it’s not particularly audacious. Most people throughout time hope things get better. But if you just put your hope in a hero that has their own motivations, change might never come. You can call for it til you’re blue in the face.

You have to fight for change. Not just ask for it in a song, not just do it when everyone is standing next to you, and not give up when it doesn’t magically happen. This feel good jingle ended up, intentionally or not, being an a bit of of a hope vampire song that causes people to feel hopeless, and either complacent or angry at the wrong people.

I prefer Fight Song. It empowers the individual. One match can make an explosion. Start now.
